National Level Inception Workshop of the Project Protection and Enforcement of Women Rights (PEWR)

Ministry of Home Affairs and UNFPA has organized a half day national level inception workshop of the project “Protection and Enforcement of Women Rights”at CIRDAP conference room on 29th January 2014 at Dhaka. The Project will be executed directly by Bangladesh Police under Ministry of Home Affairs with the technical assistance from UNFPA. The main objective of the workshop was to orient the stakeholders about the project, its goal, output, activities and implementation modalities and come across a coordination mechanism among the stakeholders in addressing sexual and gender base violence against women. This project will strengthen the capacity of police to deal, manage of SGV cases and strengthen its MIS to track, monitor the progress on SGBV and Child Marriage issues in Bangladesh.

There participants comprised of government highly officials, UN agencies, INGOs, NGO’s representatives, various donor organizations, police, university teachers, media and civil society.Mr.  C.Q.K Mustaq,honourable Senior Secretary of Ministry of Home Affairs was present as the Chief Guest and Additional Inspector General, Police and UNFPA Representative were the special guests at the workshop. “In Bangladesh still many people are not aware on the concept of gender. Due to our socio-cultural mind-set situation of violence against women is still not well reported because women do not feel comfortable with police. We need to consider this thing when we launch women help desk at thana.  We should think more on how to make it more women friendly.” stated by the chief guest in his speech.

Opening the space forparticipants’ discussion the workshop came up with crucial constructive comments, suggestions and recommendations which will be incorporated for the better functioning of the project. Subsequently it was able to draw attention of prominent national print and electronic media like The Daily ProthomAlo, The Daily Jugantor, The Daily Star and BTV.
