UNFPA Provides Life-Saving Ambulance for Refugees in Coxs Bazar

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) handed over a brand-new ambulance in Kutupalong refugee camp, Cox’s Bazar to the NGO Research, Training and Management (RTM) International on 28 May 2017. The ambulance will ensure that the refugees living in two camps, as well as host communities, can access life-saving treatment in the case of a medical emergency. A total of four ambulances are now available to transport critical cases from the refugee camps to the district hospital or NGO-run clinics.

In Kutupalong refugee camp, Mr. Samsu Douza, Additional RRRC; UNHCR Country Representative, Mr. Shinji Kubo; UNFPA Chief of Health, Dr. Sathyanarayanan Doraiswamy and Dr. Ahmed-Al Kabir, President, RTMI also celebrated the newly integrated health services available at the Primary Health Care Center. The integrated health center, a joint effort by UNHCR and UNFPA, will now provide refugees with a range of primary health care services, including sexual and reproductive health care and maternity and newborn care, all in one space. Four midwives, recruited by UNFPA, will ensure that women are taken care of in a professional manner throughout their pregnancy and at the time of delivery. The Primary Health Care center also includes an adolescent health corner where young people receive information and services specifically targeted for their needs. The same model of services is also available in Nayapara Refugee Camp in Teknaf Upazila in Cox’s Bazar.

28th May also marks Safe Motherhood Day. Dr. Doraiswamy highlighted that: “The commitment made by the Government of Bangladesh, as well as the strong partnership between UNFPA, UNHCR, RTMI and RHU is ensuring that refugees and host communities will receive high quality care services in an efficient manner.”
